Obsession: Strong Flavored Cheese
Americans are notorious for liking the “mild” cheeses. I call them the wimp cheese. It goes like this:
If you put a plain brie out, people will skip the rind and eat it over the sharp sharp piece of cheddar.
Me, I like the sharp, sharp cheddar, the smoky Gouda, the blue cheese, the stilton… give me the real cheese. That really inspires me, because when I taste the cheese, I think of caves in France, Monks and more than a thousand years of tradition stretching back from when our ancestors herded cattle and sheep and accidentally discovered that they could make cheese, then refined it until they came up with what we have today. Wimp’s cheese–no! Why are you going for the Krafts that tastes like rehydrate plastic, when you can have something sharp and salty and tingly on your tongue and eat far less of it?
Obsession II: Broguiere’s Chocolate Milk
I’ve liked milk since I was a little kid–not the powered milk, but real milk. People still stare at me in restaurants when I ask for things like milk. Due to this, I have become a little bit of a milk snob. I dislike powered milk because it gets too foamy and doesn’t stir right. I like whole milk because I dislike the taste of water mixed with plastic.
But by far my favorite milk is chocolate milk, and not any chocolate Milk, Broguiere’s Chocolate Milk. It is the best Chocolate milk in the world, bar none. Rich, smooth, creamy I love this milk to pieces. It goes down and the chocolate is evenly distributed without too much mouth feel of the emulsifiers of most chocolate milk.
I’m dreaming of it now as I’m drinking regular 2% milk. The price for being a snob in anything is that you never can get anything to compare to your pinnacle again. Perhaps it’s more fun searching for the best than to know what the best tastes like. All things before it are bland.
It is true that I tend to write a lot about food, but the I never really seem to gain weight at the same time. But I swear, I do have non-food inspirations… somewhere… sometime.
