Current Obsession: Kimchi Pot

My current obsession are the Onggi. It might be because I like food and I’m reading the Nihongi and Samguk Yusa. Or the fact that I love my Kimchi Chigae and the best Kimchi comes from an Onggi (no plastic bags…) Or maybe it’s the fact that I just think that they are so cool. Huge, huge jars invented for the sole purpose of pickling, with handmade clay.

If I ever get a cottage in the woods, I want one. Maybe I’ll put a menorah on top of it in the winter time, and take a picture of it, because that would be very representative of my cultural basis. Maybe have the menorah candles be red white and blue. Just because I’m American too.

It might also be because the onggi I have–the lid broke and last year I wanted a yo (a Korean mattress) and my parents wouldn’t let me buy the Onggi in front of me. (They were around to visit and wanted to get out. Long story) That was torture. Appa wouldn’t let me buy one either and he wouldn’t get one for me. (He doesn’t understand how hard they are to get in the US, because literally you can’t throw a stone without hitting someone in Korea who owns at least one of them.)

I also have obsessions with Yo, Three Kingdoms Hanbok, Hanfu and Sari. I want a Sari. With the whole outfit. (But then I want a dutch outfit too).

Maybe I can lie to myself and tell myself that the Onggi is a business expense of writing Narrow Birdcage.
